Chesapeake Personal Injury Attorney Report – Man Linked to the Death of Three in Wythe County, VA Crash is Tested for Drugs
A man from Mississippi who was involved in a Virginia crash that killed three people has been tested to find out if he was driving under the influence of drugs.
Virginia State Police said the 32-year-old from Jackson, is facing charges including “ possession of marijuana, methamphetamine and a semi-automatic weapon,” Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported.
He’s being held at the New River Jail in Pulaski County on numerous charges including possession of a firearm while in possession of a narcotic, reckless driving, possession of a schedule II narcotic with the intent to distribute, and one count of possession of marijuana, according to Corinne Geller of the Virginia State Police.
The crash claimed the lives of three and injured four others. First Sgt. K.S. McCall of the Virginia State Police said: “They are waiting on preliminary results to come back from the lab before looking into more charges,” the Telegraph reported.
The crash occurred on August 19, 2012 at about 9:40 a.m. on Route 21 near Cinnamon Run Road in Wythe County. State police say a Ford F-150 pickup truck moved out of the northbound lane and sideswiped a Chevrolet Trailblazer with three passengers traveling in the opposite direction. It then struck a Dodge Caravan head-on, killing three people.
As an experienced Chesapeake car accident injury lawyer I was appalled to read about this crash. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased.
It’s not yet known if this driver was under the influence of drugs. Although we often think of alcohol in connection with impaired driving, drug abuse is common on the roads.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 16 percent of weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for illegal, prescription, or over-the-counter medications in 2007. More than 11 percent tested positive for illicit drugs.
If you have been hurt by a drunk driver you should contact an experienced Chesapeake DUI accident injury lawyer.
