Chesapeake Dump Truck Accident Causes Major I-64 Delays
Dump trucks are among the most dangerous vehicles on our roads. This morning, a Chesapeake dump truck accident left two truckers injured and resulted in a shutdown of I-64 westbound.
Police said two dump trucks were involved in the wreck. Traffic cameras showed one of the trucks on its side by the road. The truck overturned and spilled sand all over Interstate 64, leading to a shutdown of westbound lanes.
According to Lt. Greg Mathias of Virginia State Police, the wreck occurred around 9:30 a.m. and involved two dump trucks. One of them was heading eastbound when it crossed a median and struck a truck heading west.
The accident led to the closure of all westbound lanes just before Military Highway. Virginia State Police said a two-hour closure is expected. Mathias said both dump truck drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Virginia Department of Transportation said a detour was set up at the interchange of I-64 and Interstate 264 after the Chesapeake dump truck accident. VDOT later said one eastbound lane had also been closed on I-64.
Chesapeake Dump Truck Accident Highlights Big Rig Dangers
Dump trucks are among the most dangerous vehicles on our roads. They overturn easily and have blind spots. It can be easy for the drivers to lose control of the heavy vehicles.
In 2015, I noted how a dump truck accident proved fatal on Chesapeake’s Military Highway when a dump truck plowed into a van.
Three adults were in the van involved in the Chesapeake dump truck accident. They were pulled over at the side of the road to change a tire when the heavy truck struck them. One of the three died at the accident scene while the other two adults in the van and the dump truck driver were transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Last year a passenger in a pickup was killed in an accident involving a dump truck on Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach. You can read more about this accident on our personal injury blog.
All cases are unique and different and no single result is a predictor of a future result, but last year we secured a $675,000 settlement for a woman who sustained a traumatic brain injury in a wreck with a dump truck in Virginia Beach.
