Car Accident That Injured Three in James City County, VA Was Caused by Racing Say Police
Police say racing was the cause of an accident in Toano in James City County, VA that led to the hospitalization of three people including two children and one man who was dragged approximately four miles by a car.
I was saddened to read two children were also injured in this accident that seems to have been highly avoidable.
The accident caused the closure of westbound Richmond Road in the 8900 block for several hours as police investigated, the Daily Press reported.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that two vehicles were traveling westbound on Richmond Road at high speed,” the Daily Press reported. According to police, a 1997 Volkswagen sedan, driven by a 31-year old man from Lanexa, lost control near James City Recycling. The car hydroplaned on the wet road, spun several times and struck a tree, ejecting the driver.
The man was then run over and dragged about 4 miles by the second vehicle, a 1995 Honda sedan, which was driven by a 22-year old from Providence Ford.
“The driver of the Honda indicated that he had been racing with the driver of the VW and saw the vehicle crash when he ran over what he believed to be vehicle debris. It was not until he was alerted in New Kent County by another motorist that there was a body under his car that he stopped,” the Daily Press reported.
The VW driver was seriously injured. Two passengers – a boy and a girl, both aged 8, were also treated for injuries.
Police said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash. Incidents involving racing are not as rare as we may think. Last year I reported how one driver was left with life-threatening injuries after an accident linked to racing in Virginia Beach.
