Boy, 3 From Newport News, VA Died a Day After His Mother Crashed Her Car in Southampton, VA
I was saddened to read of the death of a 3-year-old boy from Newport News, a day after a wreck in Southampton County, VA.
The child died on Dec. 27, at Riverside Regional Medical Center said Maj. Gene Drewery with Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.
The Daily Press reported the child’s mother was behind the wheel of a 2003 Hyundai Sonata east on U.S. 58 near Capron when the car left the roadway and hit a tree on Dec. 26, 2012.
The Daily Press reported the car with the boy and the boy’s father inside, was traveling at 60 mph and the driver lost control in rainy conditions.
According to reports the boy and his mother were taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital, were treated for their injuries and released later on the same day.
The mother was issued a summons for reckless driving, police said.
In cases where a passenger dies after a car wreck, there may be grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit to be brought against a driver.
This tragic case also raises questions as to whether a child was released from a hospital prematurely, raising the question of possible medical malpractice.
There are a number of unanswered questions but my thoughts as a Newport News wrongful death lawyer are with the family of the deceased. The Cooper Hurley law Firm has secured a number of settlements for more than $1 million. See our case results.
