Another Bus Accident Claims Life of One, Injures More Than 40 in Pennsylvania
Safety in the tour bus industry has preoccupied a large number of officials for many hours in recent years.
I’m sad to report there seems to be scant little evidence that tour buses are safer. Just days after a serious tour bus accident in Tennessee, a Greyhound bus has been involved in an accident in Pennsylvania, that left one person dead and injured more than 40 people.
CNN reported the accident occurred along Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania in the early hours of October 9, 2013 in Union County south of Williamsport.
Recent bus accidents have been caused by a range of factors from driver fatigue to mechanical defects. The latest crash again asks questions about the actions of the driver.
ABC reported the New York City-to-Ohio Greyhound Charter bus crashed around 2 a.m. near the exit for Williamsport. Investigators said the bus appears to have slammed into the back of a tractor trailer.
It’s too early to say whether or not driver fatigue was an accident in this crash. It certainly was in a horrific tour bus crash in Virginia in 2011. Last year a judge convicted driver Kin Yiu Cheung of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in the bus crash that claimed the lives of four passengers and injured dozens along Interstate 95. He fell asleep at the wheel and the bus veered off the Interstate.
Earlier this month eight people were killed in an accident involving a bus in Tennessee. A tire blew on the bus, leading to a collision with a tractor trailer.
Recent bus crashes put the spotlight on bus operators and led to a federal crackdown on charter buses. Sadly the accidents continue to occur with an alarming regularity.
